A Structured Approach to Responsibility: CSRD, ESRS and ESG

Sustainability is one of the guiding principles of modern corporate governance – and a key pillar of our approach at HORA. With a clear commitment to ecological, social and responsible business practices, we are actively preparing for the challenges of the future. Our work is based on the legal framework provided by the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which requires certain companies to publicly disclose their sustainability-related activities. The specific content and requirements of these disclosures are outlined in the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which are divided into three core categories: Environment (E), Social (S) and Governance (G). Under current regulations, HORA will become subject to mandatory reporting as of the 2027 financial year (covering the year 2026). However, the ongoing omnibus procedure may lead to a simplified approach – a final decision is still pending. Regardless of this, we voluntarily produced our first internal ESG report in 2024 – as a pilot project, a learning opportunity and a step forward in our strategic development. For our external communication, we continue to follow the structure and principles of the ESRS. Our ambition remains unchanged: transparency, foresight and responsibility – in our reporting and in everything we do.

The Foundation of Sustainable Development: Our Value Chain

At HORA, sustainability means taking a clear and comprehensive view – of your expectations for a forward-looking partner and of our entire value chain, from steel procurement to global delivery. As part of our materiality analysis, we not only examined our internal processes, but also assessed the wider impacts and risks along our supply and production chains. This holistic perspective enables us to position ESG topics strategically and to identify opportunities and risks at an early stage. Our objective: to make responsible decisions today that will benefit generations to come.

HORA Value Chain

Understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3 Emissions

Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company. These emissions are released directly into the atmosphere at the company’s own sites.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy – for example, electricity or district heating – produced outside the company’s boundaries.

Scope 3: All other indirect emissions arising along the upstream and downstream value chain – such as those from suppliers, transport, business travel, or the use and disposal of products.

Results of Our Materiality Analysis

In our first double materiality assessment, conducted in line with the ESRS, we identified five areas of particular relevance to HORA’s sustainable development: Climate Change (E1), Pollution (E2), Resource Use and Circular Economy (E5), Own Workforce (S1), and Consumers and End Users (S4). These topics are at the heart of our sustainability strategy and are subject to ESRS reporting requirements. Our evaluation is based on a dual perspective. On the one hand, we assess the environmental and social impact of our business activities along the entire value chain. On the other, we analyse which sustainability-related risks and opportunities may have a material financial impact on HORA. These two perspectives are brought together in our materiality matrix, offering a clear view of where we take responsibility and how we create targeted value.

The ESRS Materiality Matrix: Five key topics shape our sustainability strategy – based on their impact along the value chain and their financial relevance to HORA.
